Designing a Trading Execution Engine
Execution engine design for approval gates, provider routing, idempotency, risk checks, receipts, retries, and unknown outcomes.
Short answer. A trading execution engine should accept only an authorized command with a fresh instrument mapping, account, environment, permissions, and risk decision. It should create one deterministic client order identity, persist the attempt before sending, and reconcile ambiguous results instead of blindly retrying.
Execution gate
Validate account, environment, provider, client instance, instrument, side, quantity, price, order type, precision, permissions, freshness, and risk limits. Missing or ambiguous evidence should fail closed.
Unknown outcome
A network timeout after submission is not proof of rejection. Persist Unknown, retain the original provider identity and native client order ID, query the provider, and reconcile before any new command is considered.
Retry policy
Retry transport-safe reads with bounded backoff. Never automatically resend a non-idempotent order merely because the connection failed. A retry requires a provider-supported idempotency key or a completed reconciliation.
Receipts and audit
Store request hash, policy revision, risk result, provider response, timestamps, event sequence, and operator approval. These records allow a production incident to be reconstructed without relying on logs alone.
