How to Normalize Symbols Across Binance, OKX and Bybit
A safe symbol normalization model for Binance, OKX, Bybit, canonical instruments, derivatives, and provider-native identifiers.
Short answer. Normalize symbols through an instrument mapping table, not by string replacement. Binance uses BTCUSDT, OKX uses BTC-USDT, and Bybit commonly uses BTCUSDT for spot or derivatives contexts; the provider-native symbol must remain attached to a canonical instrument and contract specification.
Mapping example
| Provider | Native symbol | Canonical fields to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Binance | BTCUSDT | venue, market type, base, quote, contract |
| OKX | BTC-USDT | instrument ID, instType, settle currency |
| Bybit | BTCUSDT | category, contract type, status |
Normalization algorithm
- Resolve the canonical instrument and venue.
- Query the provider catalogue for an exact native mapping.
- Validate market type, contract terms, precision, and status.
- Persist the mapping evidence and verification timestamp.
- Reject execution when any required field is ambiguous.
Spot versus derivatives
Never infer a perpetual, future, option, or inverse contract from the base and quote text alone. Asset class, instrument type, settlement, expiry, multiplier, and margin mode are part of identity.
Operational rule
Keep canonical identity for strategy and portfolio logic, but send the exact native symbol and provider-specific parameters at the adapter boundary.
